The Maiduguri Operations Office of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has launched a one-day public sensitization campaign aimed at promoting fire prevention, response, and mitigation across Borno State.
The initiative, which took place at the NEMA Conference Hall in Maiduguri, focused particularly on the growing risk of fire outbreaks caused by tanker explosions—an issue increasingly affecting Maiduguri and other urban centers in the state.
The campaign brought together key stakeholders from various sectors to discuss strategies for minimizing fire incidents and strengthening emergency preparedness at the grassroots level.
In his welcome remarks, Mallam Garba Sirajo, Head of Operations at NEMA Maiduguri, expressed gratitude to attendees and reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property through collaboration and proactive measures.
“NEMA, in partnership with the federal government, will continue working closely with the Borno State Government and other relevant stakeholders to prevent fire disasters and build safer communities,” Sirajo stated. “Today’s campaign is a vital step in enhancing community resilience and public safety across the state.”
Participants included representatives from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Federal Fire Service, Borno State Transport Management Agency (BOTMA), Borno State Emergency Management Agency (BOSEMA), and the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW).
A key highlight of the event was a series of educational lectures delivered by officials from the Federal Fire Service and other agencies, who provided practical guidance on fire prevention techniques and emergency response protocols.
The campaign also aimed to equip transport workers and local communities with critical knowledge and tools to reduce fire risks and respond effectively in emergencies.
Following the conference, participants proceeded to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPC) Depot in Maiduguri for a live fire prevention demonstration. The simulation showcased real-time emergency response actions during a tanker explosion scenario, underscoring the importance of preparedness and inter-agency coordination in managing fire incidents.
